Fourteen months after undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery at University of Michigan Health-West, Michelle Bowser reflects on how the procedure has reshaped her health, confidence and daily life. Since her surgery in October 2023, the registered medical assistant has lost 80 pounds—an achievement that has not only transformed her physically but also mentally.
“I went from 252 lbs. to 175 lbs., so I’m feeling so much better,” Michelle says. “My quality of life is a lot better—simple things like tying my shoes, going up and down the stairs, carrying laundry. It all has become easier, and I’m no longer winded. I don’t have the swelling that I had before. Overall, my energy has increased.”

While the results have been life-changing, the journey has not been without challenges. Adjusting to new eating habits, navigating her body’s hunger cues and prioritizing nutrition remain daily focuses.
“The surgery shrinks your stomach, so what you can and cannot eat is different. And what you eat makes a huge difference,” she explains. “Making sure I get my protein every day is important. And portions—I don’t get the hunger cues and the full cues that I had before surgery.”
To maintain her progress, Michelle has developed strategies to stay on track, including always carrying healthy snacks with her.
“Eating because I know I need to eat has been my big thing, and just making sure that when I do, it’s healthy stuff—nutrients, protein, making sure that I reach those goals,” she says. “It’s easy to go and grab a treat that somebody brings into the break room because it’s there or stop at the gas station and grab something unhealthy because it’s quick and easy. So always carrying food with me or protein bars has been a big adjustment.”
Beyond physical changes, Michelle has gained a new perspective on patience and perseverance.
“I would tell others considering weight loss surgery to do the research and make sure that they have a support system because it is not easy. It’s definitely very challenging,” she says. “You get upset sometimes, you have doubts about whether or not it was the right thing to do, but in the end, it will be okay, and you will feel much better.”
Looking ahead, Michelle remains focused on her long-term health goals. She’s excited to continue building strength and maintaining her new lifestyle—embracing a future filled with possibilities.
